The perfect stop on our way from Vienna to Süd-Burgenland was Eisenstadt (Kismarton), the provincial capital of Burgenland. We toured the imposing Esterházy Castle, which dominates the cityscape.
Eisenstadt is not only the political center of Burgenland, but historically it was once the seat of the influential Esterházy princely family, thanks to whom the city became a major center of art and culture.
The city owes its world fame largely to Joseph Haydn, the outstanding composer of classicism. Haydn served the Esterházy princes for decades and composed a significant part of his works in this city.
The history of the city is closely linked to the Esterházys, thanks to whom Eisenstadt’s development accelerated in the 17th century. During the Second World War, After World War II, in 1945, the province of Burgenland in its present sense was founded, with Eisenstadt as its seat from 1925, thus increasing its political importance.
After a walk in the castle park, we had lunch in the restaurant opposite the castle entrance, where the waiter noted with surprise that the members of the company were speaking to each other in german, english, hungarian and tagalog. Well, yes, we came together from 4 countries/3 continents for this trip.
