We planned our trip to Slovenia to be a short but meaningful getaway. As we crossed the border, our first stop was Murska Sobota. Although many people just drive through it on the highway, we decided that it deserved a more thorough walk, as the city is connected to Hungary in a thousand ways.
As we walked through the city center, history was felt at every step. For centuries, Murska Sobota was an integral part of historical Hungary, and within it, Vas County. This city was the economic and cultural center of the Vendvidék, and this dual identity – the Hungarian heritage and the Slovenian present – still gives the place a special atmosphere today.
It was interesting to see how Murska Sobota has preserved its market town character while becoming a modern regional center. Standing on the main square, you can still discover the old merchant houses that were witnesses to the world of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy before the Treaty of Trianon.
