After the bustling atmosphere of the wine festival and the tastings, we were looking for something completely different, and the nearby Güssing Castle (Németújvár) proved to be the perfect destination.
The castle, which sits on top of a volcanic cone, was an impressive sight even from afar. Although the steep road to the castle after the wine tasting and the festival tested our energy a bit, the effort was absolutely worth it!
From above, a breathtaking panorama of the southwest Burgenland opened up before us – the real “reward” for the climb. Güssing Castle is one of the oldest and most important castles in Austria, with a history dating back to the 12th century.
The castle was owned by the powerful Batthyány family for centuries and played a key role in the history of the region, especially during the wars against the Turks.
