Bangkok‘s full name is the longest place name of the world: Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan Amonphimanawatansathit Sakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit, meaning “City of angels, great city of immortals, magnificent city of the nine gems, seat of the king, city of royal palaces, home of gods incarnate, erected by Visvakarman at Indra’s behest”. But the locals call it Krung Thep Maha Nakhon or simply Krung Thep.

It’s an interesting experience to try out the boats powered by a huge, smoke-spewing motor that often rush through the narrow canals at terrifying speed. As in every Asian city, we often find super-modern skyscrapers and the ramshackle homes of the poorest people side by side, but wherever we go, sooner or later we stumble upon a floating market, whose food offer will give a hungry traveler enough to try for weeks.
