Angkor is the remains of an ancient city in Cambodia, the former capital of the Khmer Empire (9th-15th centuries), built with impressive temples and buildings, including the world-famous Angkor Wat (the world’s largest religious monument) and the Bayon Temple (at the center of Angkor Thom), and is now one of the most important archaeological sites and tourist attractions in Southeast Asia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Foundation: King Yasovarman I founded the city and created the first large reservoirs.
Angkor Wat: Built by Suryavarman II (12th century) over 30 years, with the help of 50,000 workers and 5,000 sculptors.
Angkor Thom & Bayon: Built by King Jayavarman VII in the late 12th century, with the distinctive face towers of the Bayon Temple.
Angkor is a place where you can spend weeks without getting bored, as the sights are endlessly varied. With every step, new patterns of carvings never seen before are revealed to us in this fantastic place.
